I needed a small break from the mermaid picture I am working on - and I have just received my new Copic multiliners, so I thought, hey, why not give them a quick try?
I was hoping these could be a nice alternative to the Faber-Castell pens I use for inking. I like the FC very much, but even the thin-tipped ones are still not quite thin enough for my taste for small detail work. Unfortunately... I am not too impressed. Firstly - let's get something straight. Copic, if you are listening - this color is not a sepia. It's ORANGE. And secondly, they feel kind of scratchy on the paper.
Because their colour is *so* light, this was about as far as I could go with dark colours without completely loosing my linework (and still I had to pass my usual FC liner over some of the lines because the picture was unreadable in some areas). I got quite frustrated after a while - I had planned to do more details, patterns on the dress, etc... but the lack of contrast would have made it difficult to read, so I just stopped here. Sometimes less is more, they say.
Anyway, I had fun with this. Not exactly a challenging picture where I stepped out of my confort zone, but definitely relaxing.
PS: the read bloom around her head was not intentional - my "waterproof" black Copic bled like death into my watercolor wash. Not a glorious day for Copic indeed.
(But I like it actually - happy accidents and the best!)
